This video was created during a six-week fellowship called Southern Exposure. The film was produced in partnership with The Nature Conservancy of Alabama and the Alabama River Alliance. Many ecosystems in Alabama and throughout the Southeast evolved with fire. Human-ignited “prescribed fire,” also known as a controlled burn, is an essential technique used to mimic this natural process and to maintain and restore critical habitats. With an ever-growing population and extensive efforts to restore large areas of native habitats—such as longleaf pine—strong partnerships are vital to provide the capacity needed to implement fire at the scale required to achieve these goals.
